TOEFL iBT - Internet Based Test in Ottawa
TOEFL iBT is the current format of the Test of English as a Foreign Language being conducted in Canada. Taken via the Internet, it will test the four language skills necessary for effective communication. Students will be required to use their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in an integrated fashion on the test, as they would have to in the classroom in a college or university.

Many licensing boards, government and certification agencies, and exchange and scholarship programs also use the scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose first language is not English.
Classes at St. Patrick's Adult School are presented by instructors specially trained by Educational Testing Service, creator of the test. Practice in the integrated skills approach, attention to strengthening individual skills, and useful test-taking strategies, as well as practice test sessions form the basis for this course.
The Structure of the Test
The TOEFL test consists of four parts.
- Reading
- Listening
- Speaking
- Writing
The new integrated tasks will require the test taker to
- read, listen, and then speak in response to a question
- listen and then speak in response to a question
- read, listen, and then write in response to a question
As well, this new test includes six speaking tasks and two writing tasks.
Reading
This section is made up of three to five readings of between 500 and 700 words each followed by multiple choice questions.
Listening
This section is made up of between six and nine short audios. followed by multiple choice questions.
Speaking
This section consists of about six speaking exercises.
Writing
This section has two writing assignments.
